The Sauna Dropshipping Niche: A Worked Analysis With Real Prices

By Lex, Founder of Dropship Circle

The sauna dropshipping niche means selling home saunas online while the supplier delivers direct to the customer. It qualifies as high-ticket on price: UK listings I checked on 1 October 2026 ran from £1,199 to more than £7,000. The hard parts are electrical installation, delivery of a heavy flat-packed product, and supplier terms on returns.

This is a worked analysis. It is not a case study, and I am not going to present a sauna store's results here. What follows is the public evidence on prices and installation, one illustration of the margin with every assumption labelled, and the checks I teach for any high-ticket niche, applied to saunas. I will also tell you where saunas belong in a store. In my own niche advice they appear as one category inside a wider range.

Is the sauna dropshipping niche worth entering?

It is worth researching, as one category inside a wider Wellness or Outdoor Living store, and only once you have answered the installation question.

When students ask me about niches, I define a strong Wellness niche as saunas of all types, ice baths, red light therapy, massage products and related items, with fitness and gym equipment as an optional expansion later. Saunas also appear in my advice on Outdoor Living stores. Those start with outdoor kitchens, grills, pizza ovens, fire pits and seating, and add outdoor saunas and storage afterwards.

So saunas sit inside niches I recommend. One good reason to keep them inside a wider store is supplier depth. Before committing to any niche, I tell students to check there are enough brands, distributors and suppliers to work with. A store with five categories has far more suppliers to approach than a store with one.

What do saunas cost at retail right now?

At the time of writing, UK retailers list home saunas from about £1,200 for a small plug-in infrared cabin to £7,000 or more for a large outdoor barrel.

I checked two UK retailers' own listings on 1 October 2026.

Sauna type

Listed price

Power and installation, as listed

What it means for you

Two-person indoor infrared cabin

£1,199

2,350 W, runs from a standard household socket

Delivered, assembled, plugged in

Four-person outdoor barrel

£2,999

Check the heater specification

Outdoor siting and electrics to resolve

Two-person outdoor barrel or cube

£3,995 to £5,990.99

Arrives flat-packed, professional installation offered as an option

Someone must build it

Larger outdoor barrel, four to eight person

From £6,599 and from £7,099

Check the heater specification

Highest price, highest delivery and installation load

Every row clears the high-ticket threshold. That is the easy check. One of the standard reasons a niche gets rejected in our research process is that the item value turns out too low once you list the real products. Saunas do not have that problem. They have the other one on the list: fitting.

What does the margin look like on one sauna sale?

On an illustrative £2,400 sauna at a 25% margin, about £260 is left after card fees, a delivery contribution and advertising, before anything goes wrong.

I am using one example and carrying it through. Say a sauna retails at £2,400 and your trade terms give you a 25% margin. These numbers are assumptions for the sake of the sum. They are not a supplier quote or a store result.

Line

Amount

Running total

Gross margin at 25% of £2,400

£600.00

£600.00

Card fee at 2% plus 25p

£48.25

£551.75

Delivery contribution (assumed)

£90.00

£461.75

Ad cost to win the order (assumed)

£200.00

£261.75

The card fee is the one line I can source. It is the online rate on Shopify's UK Basic plan as shown on 1 October 2026. Replace the other two with your supplier's delivery charge and your own ad numbers.

£261.75 is a workable figure on a single order. Now test it. Say a delivery goes wrong and costs you £60 to put right. You are left with £201.75. The order survives.

Run the same test on a thin margin. A £1,000 sauna with a £120 gross margin loses half of it to that one £60 delivery issue, and it has not paid for a click yet. The niche and the problem are the same. The outcome is completely different. The margin you negotiate matters more than the category you pick.

What makes saunas harder to sell than other high-ticket products?

Three things make them harder: the electrics, the freight and the warranty. Planning rules add a fourth question for outdoor models.

Electrical. A plug-in infrared cabin and a traditional heated sauna are different products. Harvia, the Finnish heater manufacturer, publishes the requirements for each heater. Its 9 kW Cilindro PC90 needs a 40 amp fuse on a single-phase 230 V supply, or three 16 amp fuses on a 400 V three-phase supply. Its 6 kW Hidden Heater (a commercial model) is listed at 400 V three-phase (both checked 1 October 2026). A UK plug is fused at 13 amps. So a heater like these has to be wired in by an electrician, and your customer needs to know that before they order. Ask every supplier for the heater model, its electrical requirements and its compliance documents. If they cannot produce them, walk away.

Freight. A sauna cabin arrives flat-packed and heavy. The 6 kW heater above weighs 33 kg on its own, and the 9 kW model takes 80 kg of stones. Ask the supplier which carrier they use, whether delivery is kerbside, and what the claims process is when a panel arrives damaged. If a failure is the supplier's fault, my advice to students is that the responsibility sits with the supplier. Go back to them and ask for a larger margin or a rebate on failed orders.

Warranty. Only promise what the supplier backs. The infrared cabin in the table is sold with a one-year care plan covering parts. Find out who sends the part, who fits it and who pays. Do not sell installation or a service plan unless you have a named party to deliver it.

Planning. In England, the Planning Portal's outbuildings guide lists sauna cabins among the garden buildings covered by the outbuilding rules. An outbuilding within two metres of a boundary must not exceed 2.5 metres in height, and outbuildings must not cover more than half the land around the original house. I read the guide on 1 October 2026. The buyer is responsible for this. You should still be able to point them to the guide, because a customer who finds out after delivery may want a refund.

Then there are returns. UK customers who buy online can cancel within 14 days of delivery (GOV.UK). The customer bears the direct cost of returning the goods unless you agreed to pay or failed to tell them (Consumer Contracts Regulations, regulation 35). Put that in your terms. Then get the supplier's returns policy in writing. A supplier that will not accept change-of-mind returns leaves you refunding a customer for a sauna you cannot send back.

Is the sauna niche too crowded to enter?

I cannot give you a market size I would put my name to, so here is how to measure the competition yourself.

I do not avoid a market because competitors exist. What matters is whether there is real demand, whether the suppliers are worth working with and whether the economics are healthy. Competitors with showrooms are a sign the market is real.

Run this check in an afternoon:

  1. Search "infrared sauna", "barrel sauna" and "outdoor sauna" on Google and Google Shopping.

  2. List every retailer. Mark the ones that sell only online. Those are the competitors to study.

  3. Open each one's Brands page and write down every brand.

  4. Check search volume for the broad terms, then for the specific products. A niche fails our process when the volume disappears once you drill down.

  5. Look at the trend across several years in Google Trends for seasonality.

If you find a brand that competitors stock but nobody advertises on Google Shopping, treat it as an opening and contact the brand directly.

How do you find sauna suppliers?

Trace each brand from your competitor list back to the manufacturer or its UK distributor, then ring them.

The search I teach is the brand name plus "distributor UK", "supplier" or "importer". I tell beginners to start with UK brands, suppliers and distributors. An overseas supplier can work if it will send single units to UK customers. Buyers of bulky specialist products are often willing to wait longer for delivery. But if getting stock into the country makes fulfilment complicated or costly, look for another supplier.

Make first contact by phone and ask for the person who handles new trade accounts. If they say they only supply showrooms, propose a 90-day trial. If they will ship to a business address but not to your customer, ask which couriers they already use and explain that direct dispatch saves a second delivery charge. Expect to pay proforma at first, which means you pay the supplier's invoice before they dispatch. Our guide to getting approved by high-ticket suppliers covers the call in detail.

What should you check before you commit to saunas?

Check these eight points, and treat any one failure as a reason to pause.

  • There are enough brands and distributors to approach.

  • At least one supplier will dispatch single units direct to customers.

  • You have the heater model and its electrical requirements for every product.

  • You know who installs a hardwired heater, and the customer is told before purchase.

  • The supplier's returns and damage policies are in writing.

  • The warranty names who supplies and fits parts.

  • Your margin sum uses the supplier's real delivery charge.

  • Saunas sit beside other categories, so the store does not depend on one supplier.

Saunas pass the price test easily and make you work on everything else. That is true of most good high-ticket products. For other categories to weigh them against, see our post on profitable niches for dropshipping.

If you are weighing saunas against another category, or trying to work out whether a supplier's numbers hold up once fees and freight are in, that is the groundwork Dropship Circle's free training walks through. It will not tell you saunas will work. It shows you how to check before you commit money to a supplier or a product line. Budget £1,000 or more to get started with a store of your own.
